Miles quietly walked beside me as we reached the river. There was a tension in the air, and the only sounds were the rushing rapids and occasional animal.

“So, when are we going to do it?” I asked, breaking the fragile tension.

He turned to me, eyes wide and mouth lax, as his shoulders tensed up. He seemed ready to jump into the river. “What do you mean? When are we going to do what?”

I sighed—I hated chasing after a man. Despite everything, I considered myself to be rather traditional, but Miles was shy. If I had to take the lead for us to get anywhere, then so be it.

“This bonding thing?” I clarified, letting go of his hand and gesturing between us. “Is it like Julian and mine, where he jumped into my memories and I accepted the inevitable?”

Miles’s brows lowered, and his tone turned cautious. “No…” he said slowly. His fingers began to twitch, and he shoved his hand in his pockets, but his voice was steady when he responded. “The process is different for each of us, and the way it happens is a larger indicator of how our relationship will be in this life. Julian is…” His words trailed off, and face turned cautiously blank. “Shui expects you to completely trust him, to depend on him. Why do you think he’s so annoyed at Damen?”

“I don’t depend on Julian…” I argued, even though in the depths of my racing heart, I knew it was true.

How had that even happened?

“Besides,” I changed the subject. “If that’s the only thing, then let’s do it—I completely give in to my role, etcetera, etcetera.”

Miles scoffed, running his fingers through his hair. “Yeah, that’s not how it’ll work with us.”

“Then how?” I pulled at his sleeve. “Why don’t you want to bond with me? What do we need to do?”

“I’m not letting you bond with me until you’re ready.” Miles sighed. “Anyway, we can’t bond until we trust each other.”

My pulse roared in my ears—did this mean he didn’t trust me? “But… I trust you.”

“No, you really don’t.” Miles shook his head. He rubbed his hands down my arms, expression softening as he met my gaze. “But that’s okay, I’ve never really given you a reason to believe in me, and I don’t want to be a burden. I’ll prove to you that I’m strong enough, and then, maybe, we’ll move on from there.”

“Miles…” What was he saying? I felt lightheaded and queasy—I was losing him.

Even now his focus had shifted from me, turning to the distance as his eyes began to shine so brightly. This should be a sad moment, but even in tragedy, a growing excitement lightened the lines of his face. Adventure called to him, like an ancient knight of old, and he had no choice but to follow his heart.

“Is that mandrake?” Miles let go of my arms, pointing excitedly toward the rushing current. “I haven’t seen one in ages.”

Or maybe he’d just seen a pretty flower.

Still though, I’d never seen one before either.
